A rare big-budget historical epic from Taiwan, the 2008 drama 1895 in Formosa tells a stirring tale of love in the time of war in 1895 Taiwan. Directed by Hung Chih Yu (Pure Accidents), 1895 in Formosa is Taiwan's first feature film shot primarily in the Hakka dialect and focusing on the Hakka experience. Espousing on one man's love for his homeland and one woman's love for her husband, the film features location shooting at key scenic spots throughout the island, beautifully recreating the atmosphere and aesthetic of late 19th-century Taiwan.


Kidnapped by bandits, the beautiful Hsien Mei (Cheryl Yang, Twenty Something Taipei, The Hospital) manages to return home safely, only to face the whispers and accusations of those who doubt her chastity. Ignoring the rumors, scholar Tang Hsing (Wen Shang Hao) marries Hsien Mei, steadfast in his love and trust. The two are soon separated by the onset of war, however, as Tang Hsing joins the Hakka militia to fight the Japanese.
